Broadcast Fax

What is Broadcast Fax? Broadcast is a feature which allows an individual to send a document or multiple documents to many recipients simultaneously. It is great for announcements, press releases, newsletters, or other types of information. Many businesses often use this for conference or workshop registration reminders, invoices, and other materials when using this form of communications.

One advantage of using broadcast fax is that the individual fax machine is not tied up with sending mass faxes to numerous recipients. When using an internet service, a company doesn’t need to have any sort of special computer equipment, fax boards or services, special software, or multiple phone lines. All that is needed when using broadcast fax is a list of fax recipients and the corresponding fax numbers, along with the document that you want to send to the list of contacts. Some broadcast fax services allow automatic area code correction, as well as the ability to exclude specific fax numbers, to prevent unwanted faxed documents from being sent.

Per Unit (Per U)

What is Per U? In the power transmission field of electrical engineering, such as in a data center, a per-unit system is the expression of system quantities as fractions of a defined base unit quantity. Calculations are simplified because quantities expressed as per-unit are the same regardless of the voltage level. Similar types of apparatus will have impedances, voltage drops and losses that are the same when expressed as a per-unit fraction of the equipment rating, even if the unit size varies widely. Conversion of per-unit quantities to volts, ohms, or amperes requires knowledge of the base that the per-unit quantities were referenced to.

Fixed Wireless

What is Fixed Wireless? Fixed wireless is the way two or more fixed locations such as buildings can transfer wireless information through radio and other wireless links. Fixed wireless is normally a part of a wireless LAN system. This system allows you to be much more cost effective, rather than using fiber or installing cables between multiple buildings. The point-to-point system allows you to not use any fiber or cable and doesn't require satellite or local telephone services. This service allows you to connect to remote areas without needing to lay new fiber or cable and the capacity of bandwidth is not restricted by the fiber or cable capacities. Most fixed wireless services pull their power from the main power source of each building.

Infrastructure Virtualization Management

What is virtualization?  A broad definition of virtualization refers to technologies designed to provide a layer of abstraction between computer hardware systems and the software running on them. By providing a logical view of computing resources, rather than a physical view, virtualization solutions make it possible to do a couple of very useful things: They can allow you, essentially, to trick your operating systems into thinking that a group of servers is a single pool of computing resources. And they can allow you to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single machine.  Virtualization software companies including VMWare, Red Hat, NetApp to name a few.

Power Optimization

What is power optimization? Power optimization allows for the data center to have backup power of one or more uninterruptible power supplies, noramlly diesel generators, but in some cases battery banks. This allows the data center to never have a power failure and allows for the data to always be stored and protected. Normally all elements of an electical system within a data center is duplicated, the reason for this is to prevent a single point of failure, always allowing for the backup system to work in its place. In many cases a static switch is used to ensure instantaneous switchover from one system to the other in the event of a power failure within the system. To keep the power system looking clean and to optimize on the space provided the floors within data centers are normally raised anywhere from 24-40 inches allowing for optimal air flow and a place to run power cabling within the building.

Looking at energy efficiency of data centers there are many ways to go about this, it is normally called power usage effectiveness or PUE. It is the simple ratio of the total facility power divided by the IT equipment power gives you the PUE. The new "standard" for data center energy efficiency is estimated to be roughly 1.2. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also has an Energy Star rating for data centers, but the data centers need to be within the top quartile of energy efficiency of all reported facilities.

Contact one of our data center specialists today to schedule a FREE data center service audit and analysis. Many of our clients have saved 30-70% on their data storage bills by utilizing GCG partners for their data center services. Our data center audit and analysis will reveal where your business can achieve the most cost-savings by switching to another service provider or by implementation of new storage technologies. Managed Solutions

What are managed solutions?  In the world of information technology (IT), managed solutions exist in the data center realm as add-on service to colocation, cloud and dedicated servers.  Managed solutions often include: device monitoring, industry standard protocols, email monitoring, Windows network monitoring, IP network monitoring, operating system monitoring, load balancing, backups, remote hands, reboots and more.  The options available for managed solutions vary greatly with each data center.

Managed server hosting is an excellent option for customers wanting to move their IT infrastructure off-site into a secure facility without the initial capital outlay associated with colocation.  In addition, managed solutions can be added to other data center options including colocation hosting and dedicated server hosting.  Another benefit of managed services is that it reduces the need for an IT administrator near the data center to perform the tasks listed above.

Redundant Networks

What is a redundant network? A redundant network is a network in which there is extra capacity, in case certain components fail. Redundant networks allow for you to cut downtime and to increase reliability. The best solution would be to allow physical loops, but to create a loop free logical topology. This can be done by utilizing the spanning tree protocol. STP allows a certain algorithm to be used on the network, resulting in a loop free logical topology. Redundant networks also allow you to have spare switches, spare routers and spare servers, it can get expensive, but allows for 24/7 availability. As a business you will need to weigh the costs of extra equipment against the cost of network downtime.

Wireless Network

What is Wireless Networking? Wireless Networking refers to all computer networks that are not directly connected by cable. Wireless Networking allows homes, businesses and telecommunication networks to cut costs by avoiding pricey installation costs for cables into buildings and or connections between two or more equipment locations. Many wireless networks are administered by using radio communication, this takes place at the physical level (layer) of the OSI network structure. There are multiple types of wireless networks such as wireless PAN, wireless LAN, wireless mesh networks, wireless MAN and wireless WAN. All of these are similar, but unique in their own way.

Wireless PAN - interconnects devices within a small area, such as smart phones, tablets and computers using radio signals such as Bluetooth.

Wireless LAN -  links two or more devices over a short distance using a wireless distribution method. Normally resulting in a connection through a access point over an internet connection.

Wireless mesh network - allows a message to be sent over a network of radio nodes. Each node is smart and can automatically re-route around a node that has lost power (such as a power outage).

Wireless MAN - connects multiple wireless LANs to create a stronger wireless network.

Wireless WAN - connections cover a large area such as suburbs, a city or multiple cities. This connection type uses point to point microwave links to connect from tower to tower.

Satellite Internet

What is a satellite internet connection? A satellite internet connection is an arrangement in which the upstream (outgoing) and the downstream(incoming) data are sent from, and arrive at, a computers through a satellite. Each subscriber's hardware includes a satellite dish, antenna and a transceiver that operate in the microwave portion of the radio spectrum. Satellite internet is normally very reliable and fast, but can vary based on factors such as internet traffic, the capacity of the server and the size of downloads you are looking to accomplish. It can get pricey for the customer in rural areas where DSL and cable modem connections are not available, which is the one downfall to satellite internet. The two way satellite internet option offers an always on connection that bypasses the dial-up process allowing for faster and more reliable speeds. If looking for a reliable, fast, always-on internet connection, satellite internet offers a great solution.

Burstable Data

What is Burstable Bandwidth? Burstable Bandwidth allows you the customer to use bandwidth in a more effective way. The reason for this is you only have to pay for the exact amount of bandwidth used each month. It is the mode of using the bandwidth provided by the website hosting service provider. This is therefore an important consideration for all website developers. Burstable Bandwidth allows you to never have a "cap" on your bandwidth, for example if your plan only includes 2GB per month and you reach that limit with a "capped" plan then you cant use anymore bandwidth, but with a burstable plan you can exceed your plan for each month and only have to pay the overage rate per GB each month. It is always good to check what the overage price will be and adjust your plan accordingly to have the right amount of bandwidth for what your business needs may be. Burstable Data is an important service that many business can benefit from.

Cloud SaaS - Software as a Service

What is SaaS? SaaS is an abbreviation for Software as a Service or sometimes referred to as "on-demand software." It is a software delivery model in which software and data are hosted within the cloud. SaaS is a common delivery model which many business applications run off. One of the largest selling points of SaaS is the reduction in IT support costs from outsourcing hardware and software maintenance and support to the SaaS provider.

SaaS has a very high growth rate and the reason for this is SaaS providers are able to provide a price that is competitive with on-premises software. SaaS vendors normally price applications using a subscription fee so you can sign up with a monthly fee or annual fee, which allows versatility in your business needs. Almost all Software as a Service vendors price the application based on usage parameters, such as the number of "seats" able to use the application at once. This can all change from each transaction, event, or other unit of value as well, allowing you to have a lot of freedom with SaaS.

API's are normally invisible to the end users. API's are pieces of coding that are created by programmers for their applications that allow other applications to interactively work together. API's are built to expose only chosen functionality and/or data while on the back end keeping other parts of the application safe.

API's are everywhere and not hard to come by, but if you are looking to get a custom API you have come to the right place. Many large companies use custom API's such as Google Maps API, Twitter API, and Flickr API, which were all custom made for a specific purpose.
