Disaster recovery is the area of security planning that deals with protecting an organization from the effects of significant negative events. Significant negative events, in this context, can include anything that puts an organization’s operations at risk: crippling cyber-attacks and equipment failures, for example, as well as hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

A disaster recovery plan (DRP) documents policies, procedures and actions to limit the disruption to an organization in the wake of a disaster. Just as a disaster is an event that makes the continuation of normal functions impossible, a disaster recovery plan consists of actions intended to minimize the negative effects of a disaster and allow the organization to maintain or quickly resume mission-critical functions.

In information technology, disaster recovery steps may include restoring servers or mainframes with backups, re-establishing private branch exchanges (PBX) or provisioning local area networks (LANs) to meet immediate business needs.

Business continuity describes the processes and procedures an organization must put in place to ensure that mission-critical business functions can continue during and after a disaster. The emphasis is more on maintaining business operations than IT infrastructure. Because business continuity and disaster recovery are so closely related, the two terms are sometimes combined as Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR or BC/DR).

Benefits of Disaster Recovery

Affordable Costs

Because the DRaaS industry is rapidly expanding, the competition has lowered the cost of integrating a disaster recovery plan and placed it within reach for most small businesses.

Simplified Planning

By working with a knowledgeable and trustworthy DRaaS provider, you have access to the necessary skills required for effective DR planning. Additionally, you never have to worry about capital outlay for expensive disaster recovery technologies and the staff needed to perform updates, track changes, carry out the most recent best practices in DR, perform infrastructure maintenance and more.

Flexible and Scalable

When you contract with a Disaster Recovery as a Service provider, you only pay for the services you use.  You also can scale up or down as your businesses needs change because the services are available on demand. The type of recovery process is determined by your organisation along with assistance from the DRaaS provider.

Efficency

When you opt to use DRaaS, the measurements for RPO and RTO can be significantly reduced for a more efficient disaster recovery plan. This is accomplished without having to endure a cost increase.

Security

Although the disaster recovery services are offered from a remote data center, this does not mean that your data and applications are less secure.  In fact, the opposite is true as DRaaS providers use advanced encryption technologies, physical site security and other processes such as two-factor authentication to ensure data and applications remain highly secure.
